Located high above Hendaye, along the Basque coast, Château Observatoire Abbadia was built between 1864 and 1884 by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, the architect behind the famous Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris. All in typical neo-Gothic style. Its architecture was inspired by the models of fortified castles dating from the Middle Ages, and visitors can tour it. Today, it is listed as a historic monument, having been donated to the Académie des sciences. Surrounding is an area of great beauty, made up of plains and forests.
