Physically, the Basques are not very different from the peoples of Western Europe. However, they do not speak an Indo-European language. <\/em> Find out more about the Basque identity in this article.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The economy\nBasque<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The\nBasque country is rich in iron ore, which has rapidly\nencouraged the region&#8217;s economic development, although it\nis also renowned for sheep farming. The\nhousehold, whose buildings, farm and family also play a major role\nin the Basque economy, in fact, there used to be\na traditional law of inheritance which ensured that the\ndescendants of the property remained intact to a single heir or\nheiress. The individual farmhouse, known as a <em>caser\u00edo<\/em>\n, was thus at the heart of Basque culture, whose isolation was\nreflected in a strong sense of family kinship among its\noccupants.    \n<\/p>\n\n<p>In\naddition to being farmers and shipbuilders thanks to\niron ore, the Basques were also sailors. They also played an important role\nin the colonization of the New World.   \n<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Basque culture and identity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Although\nthey have a strong allegiance to Roman Catholicism, being\namong the most observant Spanish Catholics, animism\nremains a predominant tradition.  \n<\/p>\n\n<p>At\nover the centuries, Basque traditions have changed as a result of the region&#8217;s strong urban and industrial development\n. Then,\nemigration to France and the Americas gradually\nreduced the population living in the <em>caser\u00edos.\n<\/em>\n Basque customs and language began to disappear\nparticularly in the industrial towns. Only a small community\nspeaks the language, found in the mountainous regions, fairly\nremote from the rest of the country. By the end of the 20th century, almost all Basques\nspoke French or Spanish.     \n<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basque primitive history<\/h3>\n\n<p>We\ndon&#8217;t know exactly the early history of the Basques, which\nto this day remains a subject of speculation. However, the\nRoman authors report that the Vascones tribe lived in a\nplace similar to the province of Navarre. Apparently, they\nresisted the Visigoths, Normans, Franks and Moors who\nsettled in the Ebro valley. Roland&#8217;s song\nsays that the Moors cut off the rearguard of\nCharlemagne&#8217;s army at the battle of Roncesvalles in 778, which is quite\nwrong, because in reality, it was the Basques.     \n<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Basque autonomy\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>In the\n10th century, Navarre incorporated the Basque territories into its\nkingdom. At the end of the political turmoil of the Middle Ages, the\nprovinces of Alava, Vizcaya and Guipuzcoa became part of\nCastile and Aragon. Although there has been a merger, the\nBasques have always retained their economic autonomy, whether\nin France or Spain.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The\nBasques showed a fierce attachment to their autonomy, which\nled them to support Don Carlos&#8217; cause in 1830, as\nSpain wanted to abolish their local privileges.\nUnfortunately, this unsuccessful struggle led the government to\nabolish the <em>fueros\n<\/em>even\nif the Basques managed to retain a certain level of local\nautonomy.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Spanish Republic<\/h3>\n\n<p>The advent\nof the Spanish Republic in 1931 divided the political\naspirations of the Basques: Guip\u00fazcoa, Vizcaya and, to some\nextent, the province of \u00c1lava were prepared to work\nfor a status of relative autonomy within the republic and,\nfor this reason, remained loyal to it despite its\nanti-Catholic policies. Navarre, for its part, was\nkeen to see the republic overthrown and provided one of the\nstrong points of the 1936 nationalist rebellion and some of\nits best Carlist troops. The city of Bilbao, which had\nalways been a bastion of liberalism against the Carlists,\nbecame both the center of republican government and of\nBasque nationalism.   The fighting lasted until September 1937 and\noutside Spain, is best remembered for the bombing,\nallegedly by German aircraft, of Guernica, the traditional\ngathering place of the province of Vizcaya and symbol of the Basque nation\nin nationalist eyes.
